We got the fence finished and the grass and wheat we seeded came up...along with a LOT of volunteer canola. The birdsfoot tresfoil we seeded with our grass prevented us from spraying. So, we put up a cross fence and are now keeping the horses on about 5 acres of the 22 we fenced. The rest has now bloomed and we are actually going to harvest the wheat/canola mess this fall!

- We found the 10 acre slew at the back of our quarter makes perfect hay. So we cut it and now have 40 bales for the winter. :) There are a lot of weeds so next spring we plan to spray and possibly put a bit of extra grass seed back there so that we will have a nice hayfield that will easily feed all of our horses.

- We attended a couple trail rides and had a blast on each of them. Met some really great people and had a lot of fun. Quinn's new horse, Rino is doing wonderful and they are getting along really well. We've done a lot of riding this summer and its been so great to be able to walk out our door and have the horses right there.

- Wedding season has started. So far we've only been to two weddings (both beautiful!) but our August and September are full. If you want to visit on the weekend you had better call first...chances are we are at a wedding.

- We actually skipped a wedding (congrats Erin & Scott) to spend August long weekend camping with some friends along the Esker Trail. It was a great trip! We all had a blast. A couple photos for your all:

-Thoroughout the past few months we've also been doing a lot of yard work. Its all coming...slowly...and we keep getting more and more plans on the list. I'm sure one day our list will be empty and we'll have a beautiful yard! For now, I'm just happy to have a bit of the junk that was laying around gone and some flowers growing in my flower beds! We still haven't pruned our orchard yet but that is just another thing on our list.

- And lastly, all of our puppies are now gone. They all went to wonderful homes and I hear from a few of them that they are doing well. Seems they got thier mother's brains as everyone has commented on how smart thier puppies are and how quickly they catch on to things. Always nice to hear comments like that. I miss the little guys but 8 puppies is a lot of work.....its nice to sleep in a bit in the mornings now! :)

I'm sure I've missed a lot, but that gives you all a quick idea of what has been happening over the past few months. Things to look forward to this fall: Golburn Fair and more weddings!

Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724186609786357155.post-72690311167726961592009-05-21T12:50:00.001-07:002009-05-21T13:31:05.547-07:00Busy Busy BusyWell it has been a very busy few weeks! We've been taking advantage of the short periods of warm weather we have been having in between the rain/snow and got started on some much needed yard projects. Perhaps the biggest project that we have tackled was building our fence over the long weekend! :) A big thank you to those who helped us out, it turned out great! Now we just need a nice warm rain and some hot sun so that our grass can begin to grow.

Before we started the fencing project, Quinn and I made a quick trip down to Kipling to look at a new horse. We came home with Rino (pronounced Rhino) who is a grade 7 year old QH/Clyde cross. Still green but has a great heart and just needs some miles. He will be a great mount of Quinn and I'm sure they are going to learn a lot together!

We had just finished with our fencing and making plans for our next big project when Chevy decided it was time for puppies! The snow melted, it got warm, then it snowed. Snow melted, got warm, and then it snowed. The snow melted and I thought surely it was finely spring. I was excited to get outside and started cleaning things up right away. I got my flower beds dug up and cleaned up some fallen trees around the yard. Yesterday it was a beautiful 22C outside! The sun was shining after work so I got on the lawn mower and got most of the lawn done with plans to pick it all up the following evening. The next morning I wake up....cloudy. Uh oh, better check the forecast....rain. Ugh. And then, when I thought spring had finally arrived, IT SNOWED TODAY!

The nerve of Mother Nature. getting me excited for spring and then throwing this out there. I HOPE this is the last snowfall of the year because I don't know how much more I can take.

On another note: I think I may have found a new home for Sami. We have been looking for some time for the right place for her and there is the possibility I have found it. I won't say anything more for now but watch for updates.

And, for those that know how much I was dreaming of spots.....I think I found a few spots on Luna's butt!!! All you none-horse people (or non-appy lovers) feel free to laugh now, but I was estatic! Knowing my luck they are likely just the last bit of winter hair or something goofy like that...but I have my fingers crossed!Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724186609786357155.post-31662018477149338472009-04-16T07:32:00.000-07:002009-04-16T07:38:36.357-07:00

For all you folks who woke up to nice sunny weather this morning, this is what the North East part of the province woke up to:

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325297538169239010" style="DISPLAY: block; I thought I had mentioned it when I started this thing but I guess not. Elk Flats was the name that came with the place. It was the name that was listed on the realty website and is simply what this particular quarter section was called. My reasoning to the name...its flat...and there is a herd of elk who live in the area. Pretty straight forward :) This winter we have seen more mule deer and moose in our yard but there has been a herd of elk around here since I was a kid.

Not a whole lot new in the homestead of Elk Flats these days. Family Day long weekend brought me the flu and I spent most of Sunday & Monday laying around the house. Slowly starting to feel better but definately not 100% yet. Wasn't feeling that great but I forced myself to go to a horseback riding lesson on Sunday. Even though my stomach was doing flip flops, it was well worth it. I'm really loving my lessons, Renee is a great coach!

This weekend we are planning a trip to the cabin with a few friends. I haven't been up there yet this year so I'm looking forward to it. It will also be Virgo's first trip up there and I have my fringers crossed it will go well. No easy why it wouldn't, but you never know I suppose.

Seems like everytime I blink someone else is getting engaged! Congrats on the latest ones to join the club, Todd & Brea! I won't lie, I'm VERY excited for your wedding....you finally gave me a reason to get Quinn on a plane and down to Mexico. And thank you also for having a winter wedding...I don't think our summer could handle any more this year!Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724186609786357155.post-9705620089001179522009-02-06T11:26:00.000-08:002009-02-06T11:39:47.996-08:00Warm Weather + Horseback ride = PerfectionWell yesterday I was determined to enjoy the wonderful break from the deep freeze we have been stuck in and left work a little early to enjoy it. Zipped home to find 2 happy dogs running around the yard. Even Virgo was having fun today! After some quick hellos and a few throws of the ball, it was out to the barn to saddle up and head out for a horseback ride It was beyond wonderful! It is days like yesterday that really make me love being back on the farm. Bunny was happy to be out and pranced around like a youngster. Everything about the ride was just what I had been craving. Today its colder and cloudy out but I'm really hoping for more winter days like yesterday!

This is another reason I love the country. These were taken back in January over several days and are unedited. Enjoy.

Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724186609786357155.post-2475912051898533112009-01-27T11:43:00.000-08:002009-01-27T12:04:35.184-08:00Where Does Time Go?So clearly I suck at this blogging thing. For one reason or another I read everyone else's blog but forget to write in my own. Oops.

So we are not late into January and have been living in a deep freeze for what seems like forever. Ugh. I am very much looking forward to spring this year, despite all the work its going to bring! It is looking like a busy summer full of yard work and weddings. Seems like everyday someone else gets engaged!

I did manage to snap a few photos during the few warm days we did get though. Everyone was enjoying the warm weather and I assure you Luna & Chevy are playing here, they are not trying to kill each other:

We have also recently adopted our newest addition to the family, Virgo. She is a 5 year old female black lab who is absolutely beautiful! She came all the way up from Kansas to live with us and she does NOT appreciate our cold weather. The poor girl doesn't have much of a coat and spends her days sleeping on the couch in our shop where its warmer. Chevy is thrilled to have a new playmate and they are slowly starting to get accustomed to each other. It likely doesn't help that we don't have internet at home yet either. I talked with the people at YourLink earlier this week and right now they have have 5-8 week waiting list!! YIKES! I called 3 weeks ago so hopefully we can get high speed early in the new year. I'm going crazy without my computer at home.

Life on the farm has been just that...life on the farm. As much as I hate this freezing cold weather (-35C without the wind here) I still enjoy heading out to feed the horses everyday. My neighbours think I'm crazy but it gives me time to bond with "my girls" and just get outside for a bit. The one thing I don't like is hauling water....I cannot wait until next year when I have an automatic waterer!!! Right now we have a heated bucket (which was frozen this morning I might add) that I fill once a day. It does the job but since our hydrant is now frozen I'm hauling water from the house which is not very fun.

On another note, it was confirmed this weekend that we will be adopting another dog! Virgo is currently living in Kansas City and will make the 2 day trip up here early in the New Year. Quinn and I had brielfy discussed getting another dog to keep Chevy company during the day but it wasn't until I read Virgo's story that I decided I needed to help her out. To make a long story short, Virgo's owner could no longer take care of her and was seeking someone to adopt her so she did not have to go a shelter. I am hoping the weather will warm up before she arrives, I doubt she has ever seen weather this cold before, but if not we will do our best to keep her warm while she makes the adjustment. Quinn and I cannot wait to meet Virgo and welcome her into our family! If you know of anyone who lives between Kansas and Tisdale, SK and may be willing to join a transport chain, please let me know.

Lastly I must post about our Christmas tree. Since I am currently living with the Grinch, I am in charge of the tree. I coaxed the Grinch to help me stand it up in our living room, however the darn thing keeps falling over. Its currently proped against the wall, waiting for me to figure out a way to make it stand. I'm scared to decorate it because I don't want to break everything when it falls over. *Sigh* Hopefully I can get it decorated before Christmas!!!!!!Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724186609786357155.post-27821840537226661122008-11-24T07:30:00.000-08:002008-11-24T07:42:53.191-08:00The mighty hunter returned yesterday...with no food for his family :( Apparently they didn't even see anything for the entire week, they should have just stayed home as we have fresh tracks in our yard every morning when I go out to do chores! But that wouldn't be any fun would it...besides, I'm pretty sure hunting isn't the only reason they take a week off work!

The past week has been fairly uneventful. My parents took off for Vegas on Wednesday and I was left to babysit thier 2 dogs. Chevy LOVES having them there to play with all day but she sure is exhausted by the evening. She has developed a pretty bad limp on her right front leg and I've been doing my best to keep her indoors as much as I can so she can rest. That silly girl will run and run and run and then when she finally stops she realizes she is sore. I'm hoping she just pulled a muscle and its nothing serious. I will definately be keeping my eye on it though.

And my mom's wonderful dog Kia has decided that its fun to bite the noses of my horses and chase Luna around the corral. She will literally run them down and bare her teeth at them so they take off. To her I'm sure its just a game but the horses get really frightened and poor Luna is now scared of all dogs. Kia knows its wrong too because I scream and yell at her and she just looks at me and wags her tail. Grrrrrrr. It frustrates me just writing about it. Anyone have any ideas how to stop this?

My water hydrant has decided to freeze up and so now I am left hauling water from the house twice a day out to my horses. Its a huge pain but I'm hoping we can figure out a way to unthaw the hydrant. I would love to bring Sami home so I have all 3 of my horses here but until the hydrant is unthawed that definately won't be happening. I can't wait until next year when I have a permanent water bowl!

While I was home alone for the week I decided to tackle the Christmas lights. We have 2 smaller spruce trees at the front of our house that I thought would look great with lights. And since we bought a lot of of lights for our wedding last year, I wasn't worried about now having enough. So, I bundle up and haul out the lights. Carefully string them up around the tree and plug them in.....only to find half of them don't work!!!!! So I rip them down, check them, put the ones that work together and not-so-carefully throw them back on the tree. They all worked for about a day until Kia decided she needed to chew on the bottom ones. So now I definately don't have enough lights to do both trees. I was going to take some photos but it looks pretty bad right now. Once Kia goes home and I get the broken strings fixed, I will post some for everyone to see.Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724186609786357155.post-13267825977663443912008-11-17T09:04:00.001-08:002008-11-17T09:26:16.705-08:00I can't believe its been a weekOverall things have been pretty uneventful over the past week. I still can't believe we have already been at the new place for over a week! I'm slowing getting things unpacked and cleaned up although I swear the boxes multiplied on the drive from the city.

Since Quinn is away hunting for the week its just me, Chevy and the horses taking care of the place. The weather has been wonderful and its given me a chance to get used to the routine before the dreaded winter storms hit. Getting up at 6am to do chores is something I'm still not used to and I'm sure I won't be until summer comes and its actually daylight when I go outside. I don't really have to do a whole lot; carry 2 pails of water, put a scoop of feed in the tub and then shovel a few forks of hay into the feeder. A quick hello and I'm back inside to get ready for work. And as much as I hate dragging my butt out of the nice warm bed in the morning, it does get me going for the day.

Morning chores would be a whole lot better though if I had a yard light. Currently ours is not working and each morning I trudge out there with my little Coleman latern, hoping not to come into contact with any wild beings. This morning I thought I thought for sure I would be having my first tomato juice bath when the smell of skunk hit my nose midway through forking hay. I paused, picked up my little Coleman and tried as best as I could to shine light in every shadow. I couldn't see anything so I called the dog to keep her close and continued on. The smell faded and I'm happy to report that neither Chevy or I are wearing perfume-de-skunk today.

The barn on our property needs some work, to say the least, but its sturdy and will be a wonderful structure once it gets some cosmetic work. This winter we've opened up one side to the horses for thier shelter and then next summer we can hopefully add some stalls and make it into a "real" barn. For now though, its great for a shelter. There was/is about 3 inches of old, dirty straw on the floor and then another 2 inches of "dirt" (old composted manure I'm assuming) I have been trying to clean up. I have decided to leave the "dirt" for the winter for the simple reason that I will need to lay a lot of straw on the concrete to make it a warm place for the horses. The "dirt" is frozen and doesn't smell so it should be all right until spring. When things start to thaw, then I'll block it off and get it cleaned out ASAP. Once we have our stalls built, I will definately be putting rubber mats down!!

We've recieved some snow in the past week and I managed to find some time to get out and take a few photos. I've attached some of the better ones here:

Did I mention that Chevy loves being on the farm!?

For some reason I forgot to take a photo of the house in my walk. Not only can let everyone know how things are going, but it gives me a chance to document what is going on. I'm still figuring all this out so bare with me!!!!

Although we didn't officially get posession of the new place until the 8th, Nov 7th marked the packign day. Originally we had planned to pack our rubbermaid tubs and hire a moving company to do the rest. However, my dad in his infinite wisedom decided we could ask a neighbor if we could borrow his 43 foot dry van and save ourselves a few dollars. Although that meant doing everything ourselves, at least I wasn't the one who had to worry about hauling the appliances into the van! Poor Quinn and Dyshon!! Several people decided to show up as we were nearing the end of packing (good timing people) and after throwing a few final things into the dry van, we closed the door and headed to Tisdale at midnight.

The next morning we were up and unloading. We had a bit more help this time which was definately appreciated! It didn't take near as long to unload the trailer and soon we had boxes stacked in every corner of the house! Although the stacks are smaller, I haven't managed to get every one of them unpacked just yet. In time....

Even with boxes yet to be unpacked, it was decided that on Sunday we would build fence. For the winter we constructed one strand of electric fence to hold my 3 horses. Not too big of an area, but definately big enough for the winter. Next spring we plan to put up some permanent fence (and hopefully an outdoor riding arena as well).

And so now its Wednesday, exactly one week since I have been on the internet. We still don't have internet at home but I am back to work today (same job, different office) and managed to find some time to check emails and start a blog. Its been crazy....I'm tired and I ache but its good to back to the country!Serendipityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10597742144098533646noreply@blogger.com0
